Push It

Oh hi.

Okay... I painted something today that scared me a bit, but I felt like I really needed to paint this painting. I feel like I need to get out of my image comfort zone. I need to paint things that might scare me and other people, just a little bit. So, that's what I did.

The lighting is awful, and I apologize for that.

I like this painting. It's not totally finished yet. The face needs work, the deer needs work, and I have yet to add the beeswax, but so far, I am happy with how it's going.

The image is from an article in National Geopgraphic. It's about the Sami who live in Jokkmokk, Sweden. They are the last of the reindeer herders. This particular image is of a herder who has come across two female deer who got into a fighting match which ended up in entaglement. They were unable to survive. One of the deer belongs to the herder who found them, the other to his cousin. He is deeply saddened to have found them...

So there it is. I was afraid to post this photo, but with the encouragement of a good friend, I did it. She told me that I need to stop being a people pleaser, and she is completely right.

This is cool Michele! High five for pushing yourself. It won't appeal to all, and that's perfectly fine.

it's haunting and beautiful and brave. i love the muted palette and layered background. did you paint over an national geographic image or draw and paint him from the picture?

I love your recent paintings! Although I also like the ones you sell on Etsy, I responded to the recent one more emotionally, than aesthetically. Well done!

It's a gift to see inside emotion. This painting does that.
A lot of folks look at my paintings and question my sanity, but many more like them. Doesn't matter, in the end we must please ourselves.

Wow! Thanks for the great feedback! It's wonderful to see that people are responding to this piece.

Beth, I drew from the photograph.

I'm planning on starting a new piece tomorrow. I'm excited about this one, and hopefully it will be close enough to being done that I can share it with you.

I really really like this! I read this article online (a few months back?) and was totally moved by how dedicated they are to their reindeer.
Well done! :)...Cathy

I think it's really good. Sometimes you just need to do something more serious than pretty pictures!
