I was so excited earlier that I blogged before I had a chance to share my day with you!
Wow! I can't believe the great press I have been getting the last two days. It's like, it's like magic!
This is what it must have felt like to be popular in high school. Okay, maybe not. This is probably way cooler.
Anyway, so I am almost done with the paintings for my show in April. AWESOME. I love painting my industrial landscapes. I really do. But by the end of a series of them I remember why I only paint them once in awhile. That sky just kills me. It has to be just perfect. Not too much blue, not too much yellow, not to much burnt sienna...I try to avoid rainbows...it's painful sometimes. And all the little intricate details in the bridges and water towers...But I think they are just about done and ready for some birds, then some cold wax medium and galkyd!
I wanted to do this series because I felt it was appropriate for my home sickness. But, I think if I was asked to do a show any time soon I would do a series of typewriters. They all have their own little personalties and characteristics. And it's fun seeing how each one comes out. I decided I wanted to paint a sewing machine last weekend, so this is what it looks like now. I am going to glue down the collage and wax the whole thing...but this the work in progress. It's exciting, and I am enjoying this idea of painting appliances and "electronics."

i love the sewing machine. and i can't wait to see the typewriters. your art so pretty...i love the juxtaposition of your pretty delicate style with machinery..
michele... would you consider talking about how you finish your surfaces? it's my curiosity poking it's head out. my friend irons/drips/irons beeswax onto her paintings. (liz tran at www.liztran.com) I am just curious... i am mostly using acrylic ink, some paint, graphite, paper and on and on, but i get shinier and shinier (is that even a word?) and am even contemplating a resin-like finish for my little paintings.

oregon, (at least Eugene) was sunny all day. i took the dogs to the dog park and they were in heaven. me too...

I use a handmade gesso with oil paint for my surface. Sometimes I use watercolor...but it's been mostly oil paint lately.
I then spread on a layer of beeswax, then take some sketch book paper, place it on top of the painting, and then use an iron to iron up the excess wax. Ideally I should be using newsprint...but that's all I have right now.
It took me about a year to really perfect this technique. You really have to experiment and see what works. I am finding that the gesso I make reacts to the Michigan weather a little differently than in Oregon too. So that's been a challenge...

oh wow this is great .. a sewing machien with text below it .. and the color combinations .. it's just nice and easy to the eye .. very creative!
But why words at the bottom instead of patches of cloth .. different colors and design .. that can be cool.
